1. Strong corrosion resistance:
Molybdenum is the key: 316 Neck Butt Welding Flange PREN value > 25, much higher than 304 stainless steel, effectively resists pitting and crevice corrosion. It also contains 2-3% molybdenum (Mo), which significantly improves its resistance to seawater, chlorides, and various acidic solutions.
In the ASTM G48 Method A standard salt spray test (5% NaCl, 35°C), carbon steel flanges under the same conditions rusted severely within 100 hours, while 316 flange specimens showed no visible pitting after 1000 hours.
